While the price of oil soars above $110 a barrel, many Americans are worried that the day will soon come when they will be forced to pay $4. On this tropical island and a few gas stations in California, $4 gas is already here, straining the pocketbooks of residents and businesses.
Maui is about to have the ignominious distinction of becoming the first area in the nation to average $4 per gallon of regular gasoline. The average price in Wailuku reached $3.934 on Thursday, the highest price in the country. At several service stations, it was just a penny shy of $4. In the more isolated areas like Hana, it had risen to $4.40 a gallon.
The high price of gasoline has hurt many families.
"It takes a big toll on us because our housing is high, our food is high, and the gasoline prices just make it worse," one resident said.
For fairly obvious reasons Hawaii is most dependent on oil than any other of the 50 states, almost all of its energy is imported oil. The state's financial health is also extremely sensitive to international prices for petrol because it depends on airplanes and ships to bring in tourists and all of its goods.
Hot off the presses: On Thursday, California nosed ahead of Hawaii with another record at a sick $3.609, overtaking Hawaii ($3.587). It’s quite a race folks and the winner loses big time! Meanwhile, the national average has risen to a record $3.267, according to AAA.
"It's as if we work just to fill our gas tank," a Los Angeles resident said. "Ironic how our gas goes up but our pay stays level."
